I started to learn a few phrases in Finnish. First, I have learned the numbers – yksi, kaksi, and, kolme. I find the pronunciation to be so weird when it comes to the letters Ä, Ö, Y. Really, this one is new to me. With the aid of Youtube videos I have somehow learned to pro- nounce those letters but when I try to spell words made with them, my pronunciation again sounds weird. Hopefully, as I continue going to language class, this will be sorted out. JANUARY 13, 2020, the first day of language school. I still re- member that I did not under- stand simple words. When our teacher told us to “istu”, I had no clue what was being said, but as everyone sat in their seats, I did the same. I was so worried because I did not understand the teacher but thankfully we started simply, with the alphabet. This was a huge shock for me. Wow, the te- acher focuses on smaller things here and does not stress the stu- dents at all. Learningandbeinggivenknow- ledge in a simple understandable way was awesome. I felt that with this kind of a start, the Finnish language will be easy to learn. ONE OF THE things that I love the most about my Finnish class is that bullying has not been a concern. Everyone is appreciated and respected whoever he/she is and whatever his/her backg- round is. Every morning, I wake up wit- hout the need for an alarm, ex- cited to go to school to learn the language. I am still in the early phase of learning Finnish but I love to pronounce the long, very long, and even very-very long words like mielenkintoinen, asi- akastauluilmoitus, henkilölli- syystodistus. How can Finnish people pronounce these words in a single breath? Oh gosh, I normally get ton- gue-tied while trying to prono- unce such long words but I am still very fascinated by them. HOMEWORK is generally somet- hing that every student gets irri- tated about but surprisingly, ho- mework was interesting. The sys- tem of learning is not just about reading and memorizing books like it was when I was in school in my home country of Nepal. The teachers have managed to successfully integrate diffe- rent modes of learning to help us retain what we are studying. Playing with flash-cards and get- ting to share thoughts with class- mates as well as the teacher, are helpful and motivating ways to learn. I have also found that listening exercises, andwatching different videos actually work when lear- ning new things. ALMOST every day onmy way to school in the morning, Finnish people that I do not know will say “hei” and smile at me. This is a very different experience than at home. Normally, people go straight without any expression if they see a new person while walking. However, here in Finland, I saw an awesome difference which makes me feel at ease, familiar with the place, and very happy for sure. THE LANGUAGE shock intensi- fies as I see the written language and the spoken language being very different from each other. When I am in class at school, the teacher speaks very slowly and is somewhat easy to under- stand. But when I go out to the stores and to the pharmacy, I feel like they speak another language other than Finnish. The locals speak so fast. Not being able to understand ma- kes me somewhat anxious. Du- ring this anxiety-filled phase of my journey, I find myself in a di- lemma but I am sure things will get better. To be continued...
