What's going on in Uusikaupunki

Torstaina 22. marraskuuta 2018 25 Happy Thanksgiving! Granger Simmons This past weekend, close relatives and friends of Al- lan and Ayo Reed made their way to the Kalanti Lu- theran Church to celebrate a timeless American tradition called Thanksgiving. About 50 guests came from many different parts of Finland to experience this holiday feast. Thanksgiving Day is the most celebrated holiday in America. It is a celebration that promotes love for family and friends, as well as grat- itude to God for all that He has provided. GUESTS at Allan and Ayo’s Thanksgiving meal got first- hand understanding of the idea of giving thanks, during the “Circle of Gratitude.” Everyone held hands and made a giant circle in the church’s fellowship hall. One by one, in various languages, people gave thanks for life, health, strength, family, friends and more. One com- mon theme of thanks during the circle of gratitude, was the impact that Allan and Ayo Reed have had on the lives of the people invited. Allan, a Finnish American andAyo, anAfricanAmerican moved to Uusikaupunki less than twoyears agoafter stum- bling upon the city during a search for a cup of coffee. –I just wanted a cup of cof- fee, says Ayo, as she tells the story of how she and Allan came to live inUusikaupunki. The couple have lived in over 13 countries throughout the years and now have set- tled into little Uusikaupunki. They enjoy their stay in Fin- land during the warmseason and head to warmer climate during the long, darkandcold winter. THE REED’S Thanksgiving meal and desserts were pre- pared by Ayo who is a pro- fessional pastry chef and baker. The meal included savory items such as Corn Casserole, Roasted Turkey, Smoked Turkey, Bread Stuff- ing, home-made Cranberry Sauce and Sunshine Carrots. Dessert consisted of all-time American favorites such as Brownies with ice cream, and Apple Crisp. There was also Pumpkin Bread, Sweet Potato Pie and a free-from everything Decadent Cho- colate Cake. There are many other countries that have adopted the Thanksgiving tradition and is celebrated on differ- ent days during the year. In America, Thanksgiving is al- ways celebratedon the fourth Thursday of November.
