Torstaina 16. tammikuuta 2020 17 Ask Mayor Vainio What do you want to see happening in Uusikau- punki this year? –What I would like to see happening in 2020 is that we get brave, bold and ac- tive in our efforts to develop the town. We are in the final stretchbefore theApril 2021 elections for City Council. The items that are on the agenda should move for- ward so that we can have some things in place and ready for the next group of leaders. How often are elections held for the City Council and Board of Uusikau- punki? –Elections are held every four years andwe hope that all of the newcomers will participate and vote. How can we get brave, bold and active in the community? – Locals: We need more active locals. Be welcom- ing and accepting of others. – Newcomers: Get in- volved. Establish contact with the community andget involved with others who live in this town. Make ef- forts to learn the language. Speaking the language in- creases your ability to have a better quality of life. ONE of the current con- versations in the townhall of Uusikaupunki is how to help foreigners and new- comers feel welcome and at home. What are your thoughts about that? – I think about the kind of environment that we create for foreigners and newcom- ers to this city. I would say that those of us who live here should be ready and willing to offer empathy, tolerance, and consider- ation of the perspective of the newcomers. The lan- guage barrier, along with other things, makes inte- gration and communica- tion quite difficult on both sides. Everyone needs to be merciful toward one an- other. Throughout history communities which do not tolerate newness end up beingweak.This newness is good for the town, exclaims Vainio What are your thoughts about the process of inte- gration? What role does the community play in helpingnewcomersas they go through this process? – When people move somewhere it is a given that they should adjust to their surroundings, but this adjustment is a two-way street. We are all adapt- ing to the situation and the environment that we create for the people will determine the success of their assimilation and in- tegration. We have tomake people feel comfortable and we are still growing in this area. Give us time and understand that this is not easy for us either. WHAT are your thoughts about language and com- munication, between newcomers and locals? Any thoughts or tips? –People from the South- western coast, and Finns in general, are criticized as and are self-critical about being introverts. People complain that it can be hard to get to know people in Finland. We know that this is the way others think about us. There is proba- bly some truth to that idea, and we are not necessarily proud of it. We knowwe are a bit peculiar. But we do not think that we are more su- perior than others. Just try to break the ice. –We are not so good at speaking Finnish to peo- ple who are not from Fin- land though. We speak too fast and use difficult words sometimes. Quite often we use slang and local dialect which only the locals un- derstand, and in those ar- eas, we have a lot of learn- ing to do but be patient with us. Groups of people who make an effort to work to- gether and learn from each other are the ones who have the most success. Employ- ers and society members need to be proactive in helping and making sure that people can study Finn- ish as soon as possible, Re- gardless of their level of education. The earlier you make the effort to learn, the sooner you are on you’re way to a better life here in Finland. HAS the influxof newcom- ers and foreigners been a challenge for the city? – It should not come as a surprise that we would be experiencing so-called growing pains because this influx of newcomers is a new thing. We should not be surprised that there are issues that are not easy to deal with, and there are things that we must learn. We should more be sur- prised if there aren’t any. There are challenges and obstacles to overcome so we need to have a com- mon understanding that none of us are perfect. It will take a strong commit- ment from us to create a sustainably inviting envi- ronment for those who are coming to our city. We have little experience and knowl- edge about how to deal with peoplewho come here from other places, but if we all as inhabitants of this town, put in the same effort, we will have good results. We need positive experiences on a community level as well as an individual level. IS there anything else that you would like to say to us as a community? –Currently, four percent of our towns’ population is foreign, and one-third of the mothers are of foreign origin. The proportion of children who have foreign parents is growing and ev- ery day we move forward. Very soon we will see this reflected in the schools much more than we see it today. There is a change in progress. Society is chang- ing. It is important to have an open discussion about the development of this town with those new citi- zens whether local or from abroad, present. – It is important to bring various opinions into the discussion and to hear the voice of those who are usu- ally underrepresented. If people are silent and afraid and prefer to anonymously express feelings in social media, it will not help us or take us forward in any way. Some people are reluctant to express their negative views because of fear of be- ing labeled as racist. Many have understandable con- cerns that may not be at the heart, racist. Usually, those who are critical are not so happy that people come here and benefit from the social security system in Finland. –There are a lot of posi- tive views also and in a civ- ilized manner, we should be able to receive the con- cerns of others and hear them out. Change is never easy but open communica- tion will aid in uniting this community and taking us forward into this next de- cade. Opettajat estradilla KULTTUURI Vakka-Suomenmusiikki- opiston kevään konsert- tikausi ja Kustaa Hiekan kulttuuriviikon musiik- kiohjelma käynnistyy opettajien noustessa Lai- tila-salin estradille sun- nuntaina 19.1. klo 18.30. Kustaa Hiekka -kulttuu- riviikon teemana on tällä kertaa liike. Opettajien konsertin ohjelma onkoottuVakka- Suomenmusiikkiopiston yhdeksän opettajan voi- min. Opettajat Estradilla -konsertin solistit ovat Hanna Elomaa , Elvira Kaavi ja Jarkko Kokki , piano; Reetta Lehtonen ja Aino Junna , laulu; Ma- ria Sapelkina , kitara sekä Marja-Liisa Santala , harmonikka. Puhaltajia mukana on kaksi: Su- sanna Laasonen, huilu ja Minna Kajander , pa- suuna. Konserttia ei ole kos- kaan aiemmin toteutettu näin isolla opettajajou- kolla, joten odotettavissa on hyvin mielenkiintoi- nen ja monipuolinen konsertti-ilta. Musiikki on taiteen- lajina yhteisöllinen ja se liikuttaa monella ulot- tuvuudella. Esimerkiksi tietyt musiikkikappaleet voivat kulkea kuulijan tai taiteilijan matkassa vuo- sikausia. Jokin tietty teos saattaa herättää voimak- kaita tunteita ja usein se saa liikkeelle uusia aja- tuksia. On rytmejä, joidenmu- kana tanssitaan tai sävel- lyksiä joita on inspiroinut jokin toiminta. Musiikki on värähtelyä ilmassa, lii- kettä sekin. OPETTAJAT Estradilla -konsertti sopii moni- puolisen musiikkimaun omistavalle. Mukana on sekä jazz-standardeja, musikaalisävelmiä, lau- luklassikoita että taituri- kappaleita. – Esiintymiset ovat niitä parhaita huippu- hetkiämuusikon arjessa, kertoo trumpetinsoiton opettaja Jarkko Kokki, joka tähän konserttiin on valinnut soolosoit- timekseen pianon. Hän kehottaa kaikkia tule- maan konserttiin kuun- telemaan mukavia sä- veliä. Musiikinopettajan ar- keen esiintyminen on todellakin odotettu hetki jamoni konsertissa esiin- tyvä opettaja onkin valin- nut jo aikapäiviä sitten esitettävän kappaleensa. Ne ovat vain odottaneet sopivaa esityshetkeä. Yksi erityisen odotettu yleisöryhmä konserttiin ovat musiikkiopiston op- pilaat ja huoltajat. Esiin- tyminen ja kuuntelukas- vatus ovat keskeinen osa musiikkiopisto-opiske- lua. Pianolla sirkukseen ja metsään KULTTUURI Vakka-Suomen musiikki- opiston ja Turun Ammatti- korkeakoulun Taideakate- mianmittavassa yhteistyö- projektissa on paljon näh- tävää ja koettavaa. Viiden flyygelinorkesteria täyden- tää teatteri- ja sirkusesitys, jonka teemana on sadun- hohtoinen ja ajankohtai- nen tarina ystävyydestä. Esitykset ovat Laitilan FinnLamex -hallissa 23.1. ja 24.1. Klo18.Näidenkaikelle yleisölle avointen esitysten lisäksi pidetään päivänäy- töksiä koululaisryhmille. KÖMPELÖ ja ajattelema- ton Ihminen saapuu Met- sän jumalattaren, Nymfin, maille ja aikoo rakentaa sinne tehtaan. Heti kohta ystävyyden sytyttyä, ihmi- nen huomaa kuinka jokin vaivaa Nymfi-ystäväänsä. Ihminen on tehnyt ehkä kohtalokkaankinvirheen ja saattanut uuden ystävänsä hengenvaaraan ja koettaa selvittää sotkunsa. Tarina kerrotaan mu- kaansatempaavan musii- kin, akrobatian, jonglee- rauksen, teatteritaiteen ja valojen keinoilla ja lopulta käy kuten saduissa yleensä. Elämä on ihanaa ja kevät koittaa! PIANOSIRKUS -spektaak- keli on osa Vakka-Suomen musiikkiopiston 50-vuo- tisjuhlavuotta sekä Kustaa Hiekka -kulttuuriviikkoa. Alkuperäisidean näytök- seen on saanut musiikki- opiston pianonsoiton opet- taja Hanna Elomaa . Piano- orkesterissasoittaayhteensä 19 musiikkiopiston oppi- lasta, kahdessa erillisessä ryhmässä. Kaikki musiikki- opiston pianonsoiton opet- tajat ovat lähettäneet pro- duktioon oppilaitaan. Myös opettajista on koottu näytöstä varten ko- koonpano, jossa soittavat Elomaan lisäksi Jussi Kau- ranen , Eija Lehtinen , El- vira Kaavi ja Päivi Kanta- nen . Näytöksen on ohjan- nut ja dramatisoinut Jean- nette Rönkkö . Sirkusoh- jaajat ovat Saila Juntunen , Hermanni Ahomies , Ira Oinonen ja Jere Virta Tu- rusta. Sirkusesiintyjiä on näytöksessä yksitoista. JUHLAVUODEN kunni- aksi musiikkiopisto to- teuttaa konserttisarjaa, jonka yksi mittavimmista voimainponnistuksista on tämä esitys. Sen valmiste- luun on kulunut yli puoli vuotta tiivistä yhteistyötä TurunAmmattikorkeakou- lun Taideakatemian sir- kusopiskelijoiden kanssa. Myös paikallisesti useat eri yhteisöt ja järjestöt ovat mukana esityksen toteut- tamisessa. Tämä kokonai- suus tukee täydellisesti Vakka-Suomen musiikki- opiston opetussuunnitel- man tavoitetta tehdä mu- siikkia yhteisöllisesti ja luo- vasti eri taiteenlajeja yhdis- täen, paikalliset olosuhteet huomioon ottaen. Esityksen käsikirjoitta- misen, ohjaamisen ja har- joittelun mittavan työn li- säksi myös käytännön jär- jestelyt vaativat aivan poik- keuksellista panostusta. Näytöksiä varten rakenne- taan tila sirkuksen ehdoilla muun muassa ilma-akro- batialle ja jongleeraukselle. Valaistukseen kiinnite- tään erityistä huomiota ja sen rooli on myös tarinal- linen. Näiden lisäksi Pia- nosirkusta varten vuok- rataan ja paikalle kuljete- taan viisi konserttiflyygeliä, joista muodostuu esitystä säestävä orkesteri. Tapahtumaa on tukenut Alfred Kordelinin säätiö merkittävällä apurahalla. Säätiön periaatteena on rakentaa suomalaisen tie- teen, taiteen ja sivistyksen tulevaisuutta.
