Welcome to this edition ofWhat’s going on inUusi- kaupunki.Thismonth youwill get tomeet a young lady by the name of Pooja Shah fromNepal. She is our first guest columnist and wants to share with you a little bit about the culture shock that she ex- perienced when first coming to Finland. I decided not to continue our discussions about the COVID-19 virus, we can get back to that later, but I wanted to let you all know that they did it! They finally put a speed limit on that road signwith the skyline of New York City. You may be wondering what exactly I am refer- ring to. How many of you have ever been driving between Uusikaupunki and let’s say, Laitila, or even on your way out of Uusikaupunki towards Lokalahti and have seen a yellow traffic sign with black shapes on it? Well, that is called a Taajama sign. I got my first, of many, tickets for traffic violations in Finland be- cause I was driving 60 km/hr after passing one of those signs. I had just tradedmy license fromU.S.A. in for a Finnish license andwas onmyway to Turku when out of nowhere a police officer jumps in front of my car telling me to pull over. I then noticed that there was a long line of cars pulled over in front of me so I did not think that I had done something wrong. I asked the officer what the issue was and he toldme that I was spee- ding. He invited me into the police van and began to ask questions and proceeded to type on his com- puter. I was still in such shock and asked himabout the speeding. He told me that whenever I see the yellow sign with the black buildings on it, I should drive 50km/hr. I said sir, do youmean to tell me that the skyline of New York City means that I must drive 50km/ hr? How would I know this? Who was supposed to tell me? Oddly enough there was a yellow sign in front of the Taajama sign that showed 60km/hr as the speed limit and that is what I was driving when I was pulled over, but that was not the speed limit after the Tajaama road sign. I began to explain to the officers that people who are not from here would never know that this is the case. I told them that they must do something about this so that others do not get tickets for the same reasons. He then proceeded to informme that the people in the line of cars in front of me were pulled over for the same reasons, and they were all Finns. I suggested that they tell the higher up’s that the ac- tual speed limit should be put on the sign with the skyline of New York. As he handed me an 80 euro ticket he assured me that nothing will change. So today, I celebrate because somebody got the message! The Ministry of Transportation finally added the speed limit and now there is no way anyone will not know what the rules are. Finally, they did it!
