Hae nyt OSTETAAN New road laws and traffic signs Granger T Simmons On June 1, 2020, the Ministry of Tran- sportation released to the public this years’ new road laws and traffic signs. The goal of this annual renewal is to improve upon traffic experiences for the country, as well as, to inform and relay messages concerning what is ac- ceptable and unacceptable as it refers to travel customs, based upon laws and regulations on a local and national level. It is the responsibility of drivers in Finland to familiarized themselves with new traffic laws and the new signs that are released to the public in June of every year. –We have new road traffic laws that are released in June of every year. So with the new rules, there is a need for road signs that express and depict what the new laws have declared, says Jukka Hopeavuori who is an expert in road signs and markings for Traficom. Traficom is The Finnish Transport and Communications Agency and is an authority inpermit, license, registration, approval, safety, and security matters, nationwide. Traficom determines what the road signs are. With the help of graphic ar- tists, the Road Engineers and their teams decide on the colors, the look, and determine if the sign accurately re- lays and clearly depicts the message of the newly released law. THISYEAR therewere very specific new laws put in place to help pedestrians, bikers, and moped users to navigate more safely through traffic.There is now a specific sign that designates certain areaswhere driversmust slowdownand give the right of way to bikers. Finland’s Ministry of Transportation looks into traffic laws from Nordic and surrounding countries and adopts those that will best suit for better traffic flow within the borders of Finland. – The Vienna Convention on Road signs from1954 was passed through the United Nations and is what is used as a guideline for creating some sort of unity when it comes to communicating traffic laws to the residents of countries all over the world, explains Mr. Hopeavuori. Traffic laws are ever-evolving as solu- tions to traffic challenges are being te- sted and developed by Road Engineers and other professionals who work with the Finnish Transport Infrastructure. This sign indicated to drivers that they must slow down and give the right of way to bikers. – The earlier version of the sign sho- wed only a bike which also repre- sented mopeds but now we have specifically put the moped for clarity sake, Jukka Hopeavuori says. When you see this sign you can not drive in this area with studded or winter tires. These signs are made for areas where there are stone roads so that they do not get destroyed. This sign indicates that you must drive at least 50 km/hr if traffic allows. You can find this sign on a multiple lane road in the city. Culture Shock: From Nepal to Uusikaupunki On November 26th, 2019, I planted my feet in Helsinki, only I felt cold, very cold, ext- reme cold. I came with a ph- rase in my mind, “Culture Shock.” It is simply an experi- ence one feels when he/she moves toanenvironment that is different fromhis/her own. Full of expectation, the happiness of seeing husband after so long, a little bit of nervousness, and obviously smile on my face because I came to Finland. THE FIRST phase of my cul- ture shock, was happiness. I came out of the airport with arms full of luggage expec- ting my husband to be there for me waiting. He was there with a green jacket, roses in hand, and a big smile. I couldn’t wait and finally hugged him as if I hadn’t seen him for centuries. Surprises were still there: earrings for my ear, my favo- rite food, sausage, which he always remembers. I came out of the airport and saw this country for the first time, Finland, the land of a thousand lakes. I gasped, ohgosh, two-floor buses!Iwassosurprised,Ihad only seen theminmovies.The most surprising thingwas that all of the buses had their own time of arrival and departure which weren’t even a tiny bit late. I couldn’t believe it, but, yes, it was real, they were not even a minute late. IT WAS totally different and maybe even ”weird” for me. Moreover, mobile phones were sufficient for paying for bus tickets, no need for cash payment.This was also a new experience for me. My luggage was stored in the lowest part of the bus. We jumped on the bus and took our seats on the second floor. It was night, total darkness and we couldn’t see anyt- hing at all during the jour- ney to my new home, Uusi- kaupunki. THEVERY next day I had ap- pointments in different offi- ces formy registration in Fin- land. Ahh! Still, the darkness was there at 9 am. It was crazy for me but it was okay be- cause the freezing cold air was touching my face and I felt good. The other shocking thing was about the offices, eve- rything was accurate and on time. Really, Finnish people are so accurate and punc- tual in their time and work. I think this is one of the reasonswhy Finland is one of the happiest countries, as all the official work can be done so easily without any stress, things are so easy going. I COMPLETED all of the ne- cessary official procedures and started life in Finland. We went shopping for food and I was able to find eve- rything so easy. Whether it was vegetables, meat, fruit, or just anything that we nee- ded. They could be found in a single place. Oh my, what were the people speaking? It was re- ally shocking, I did not un- derstand a single word that was being said. All of the na- mes and labels on the food were unrecognizable. I just bought things that were fa- miliar. Everything was exci- ting. SNOWFALL , although little compared to the last year, was awesome. Seeing people withbeautiful eyes andno fa- cial expressions at all was a lot different for me. I wanted to explore places and yes indeed I had the op- portunity to visit the dream city, Helsinki. I also visited LUT University in Lappeen- rantawheremy husband gra- duated from. I tried taking a sauna for the first time in Imatra. I think that taking a sauna works best in the winter and should be about 80° or maybe a bit more. Sauna is something that I needed du- ring the cold times. Nature is mesmerizing, and although it was snowy I went out to walk around and explore the nature of this new land. Full of optimism, na- ture, the white snow, made me feel like I will be easily able to adapt to the environ- ment of Finland. But who knows what next is waiting for me.
